REVIEW: Jessie Ware & Laura Mvula

Insatiable, slick, flawless and rich with talent, Jessie Ware smashed the stage of the HMV Ritz on the 7th March 2013.

Accompanied by the enchanting sounds of Laura Mvula, the crowd were warmed up with a performance that was way beyond the years of the young singer. Complimented by a fantastic band of musicians, Mvula delivered the likes of She, Sing to the Moon and her debut single Green Gardens with impeccable grace. The cello, violin, trumpet, harp and bass enriched the performance, transporting the audience into a musical haven, all ready for Jessie Ware:

Beginning with the sultry tones of Devotion, Jessie Ware appeared on stage all in black with a somewhat magical, glittery cape. With the audience hooked on her every note and movement, her set was thick with a moody sensuality that only illuminated the beautiful tones of the singer. Performing with the unbelievable elegance of a queen, there was no faff or novelty to her set, it all boiled down to the music: and perhaps that’s what’s so enticing about her: she sings, and that’s enough. She gave a delicious performance of Night Light, perhaps one of the most affectionate deliveries, and she only added to this loving emotion with Taking In Water which was written for her brother. You could feel this was an important gig for Jessie, she had lots of family and friends in the audience and this just mirrored her honest delivery on stage.

Ware developed this sense of magic as she delivered songs such as Still Love Me and No to Love. She then mixed it up with the light and effervescent If You’re Never Gonna Move.  The yellow lights built up the happiness and it was truly a joy to hear.

Ware offered a couple of new tracks too. Imagine It Was Us – written with Julio Bashmore – went down a treat with its disco vibes. For a split second, I felt like I was in an 80’s disco club: perfection. Ware also gave us a great version of Valentine, a collaborative effort with Sampha. The stunning singer Donique Glenn to covered Sampha’s part and its hints of Frank Ocean, and perhaps even D’Angelo,  worked impeccably in the busy venue.

Ware’s presence was solid, smart, and strong.  She finished off the show with the unquestionable tune Running, following the flawless, rich vibes of Wildest Moments.  Whilst the crowd was not wild, the music was exceptional and Jessie Ware and Laura Mvula took us to dreamy, sexy world far away. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
